On December 18th, the EuroAsia InterConnector officially awarded the route feasibility study to two Italian Companies, GAS and CESI, during the ceremony held under the auspices of the European Parliament Office in Nicosia.
In particular, GAS has been awarded the contract for the “Reconnaissance Survey to Determine the Preferred Route for the EuroAsia InterConnector” signed by Athanasios Stivaros, Technical Director of the EuroAsia InterConnector and Pietro Basciano, CEO at GAS. The survey, including environmental study, reconnaissance and technical design is expected to be completed within Q2 2016.

The EuroAsia Interconnector will be the first energy bridge between Europe and Asia, linking Greek, Cypriot and Israeli power grids via the world’s longest submarine power cable ever built. The cableâ€s length of 540 nautical miles (1,000 km), water depth of 2000 metres below sea level and its 2000 megawatts capacity make it the most ambitious electricity connector project in the world.
It will transmit energy in either direction, ending the electricity isolation of Israel, Cyprus and parts of Greece, enhancing the Trans-European network of electricity grids, while contributing to the better utilisation of renewable and low-carbon emission sources of energy.

During the ceremony, Nasos Ktorides, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and driving force behind the project, declared that “the fact that the EuroAsia InterConnector fulfils the general criteria of the Projects of Common Interest (PCI) plan and has been proposed by the European Commission to be labelled as an electricity highway, proves the significance of the project and the beneficial impact it will have on future generations of European consumers seeking cheaper, efficient and low-carbon emission energy.” It is estimated that the expected Social Economic Benefit by the EuroAsia Interconnector will be 10 billion euro. This project, in fact, offers significant economic and geopolitical benefits to the involved countries and contributes to the European Unionâ€s target for 10% of electricity interconnection between Member States.
The discovery of vast natural gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean within Cyprus, Israeli and Egyptian maritime zones that are expected to be on stream by the end of the decade, has also contributed to the importance of this Trans-Continental project that will effectively help reduce the carbon emission rates of the producer and consumer national grids linked to this “energy highway” project.

After the signing ceremony, Gianluca Marini of CESI said that “we are excited to be involved with this ‘electricity highway†that will help the united European energy market cope with an increasingly variable and decentralised electricity supply and flexible electricity demand. The technical survey for the design of the EuroAsia InterConnector, as well as the environmental impact study awarded to CESI will also prove the capability of European-made innovation and self-reliance in a highly competitive global market”. Pietro Basciano of GAS S.r.l. added that “the reconnaissance study to determine the preferred route of the EuroAsia InterConnector involves one of the most challenging sub-sea terrains of the Mediterranean. And so, this in itself is a challenge to us and we thank the project promoters for choosing us for this vital aspect of the interconnector”.

Work on the initial 329-kilometre cable link between Israel and Cyprus is expected to begin in 2017 and be completed in 2019. The second phase will connect the Greek island of Crete to Attica in mainland Greece in 2020 and the third and final phase will connect the cable from Cyprus to Crete with a view of full implementation of the “electricity highway” by 2022.

In October 2015, GAS Azerbaijani branch was awarded to provide ROV visual inspection of the existing TOTALâ€s well head in the Absheron field.
TOTAL is the operator of the Absheron offshore condensate gas field, and the development plan is currently being defined. The Absheron offshore field, discovered in 2011, is located in the southern Caspian Sea and as a water depth of 500 m. GAS carried out this ROV visual inspection using the ROV Perseo GTV built by Ageotec. The ROV visual inspection has been successfully completed early in November with exceptional productivity thanks to the robustness and power of the vehicle, to the high definition cameras –streamed via fiber optic links to the surface in real time- and to the video processor which grants exceptional images even in poor visibility conditions. Ageotec is a leading company in production of best in class ROV systems and, as well as GAS, member of the Lighthouse Group.
Operation success confirms once again the strong role of GAS as one of the main survey contractor in the Caspian Sea area. In fact since 2013, GAS provided several surveys for TOTAL during the Absheron project development such as the Offshore Geophysical surveys which included a complex AUV survey.

Saipem, through its subsidiary ERSAI Caspian Contractor LLC, has awarded GAS KCO a contract for the survey and positioning services during the construction of two pipelines of 95 km each in Kazakhstan.

Saipem, through its subsidiary ERSAI Caspian Contractor LLC, has awarded GAS KCO (Kazakh subsidiary of GAS Italy) a contract for the survey and positioning services during the construction of two pipelines of 95 km each. The pipelines will connect D Island in the Caspian Sea to the Karabatan onshore plant in Kazakhstan.
Scope of work includes the provision of personnel and equipment on board the Survey Vessel to carry out pre-lay, as laid and as built survey. More over, it includes the provision of precise positioning on board 4 Construction and Post Trenching Vessels and 14 TUGs.
One of the most challenging services requested by ERSAI is the provision of precise positioning during the pipe string push/pulling operations. This service is essential to monitor the pipe movements and preserve its integrity during the installation. 20 tracking points have been installed by GAS technicians on the buoyancy tanks aligned over 10 km of pipes. Each control point is capable to transmit the pipe position and heading to the laying barge located at 10 km of distance. String push/pulling operation is expected to take approx. to 60 days. Each tracking point is designed to be splash proof and self-powered using batteries and solar panels. The differential signal is broadcasted by means of TDMA techniques; the pipe movements are collected from the C12 pipe lay barge during push/pulling operations.
As usual, this service has been provided by GAS according to schedule, under strict guidelines on safety and result accuracy – a trademark of GAS throughout is 30 years of activity in the Oil&Gas business.

GAS is always involved in a quality improvement process for every aspect of its activities and aims to improve the quality standards of the services and products it provides. For this reason, together with the already existing International Standard ISO 9001:2008, GAS in the last few months has worked hard to obtain two important certifications, the OHSAS 18001:2007 and the ISO 14001:2004 certifications.

OHSAS 18001:2007 is the internationally applied International standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It exists to help all kinds of organizations put in place demonstrably sound occupational health and safety performance. It can be considered the widest recognized and popular occupational health and safety management system all over the world. This certification is really important for our Company, it helps to create the best possible working conditions across your organization; to identify hazards and put in place controls to manage them; to reduce workplace accidents and illness to cut related costs and downtime and to engage and motivate staff with better, safer working conditions; Demonstrate compliance to customers and suppliers

ISO 14001:2004 is a family of standards related to environmental management that exists to help organizations to minimize how their operations (processes, etc.) negatively affect the environment, but also to comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements. The benefits of using ISO 14001:2004 can include a reduced cost of waste management; savings in consumption of energy and materials; a lower distribution costs; an improved corporate image among regulators, customers and the public.

In fact, yesterday our team had to suspend all the underway activities to take part to the rescue operations of a sinking RIB, which hosted about a hundred migrants. Following the instructions received by the Vessel Master from Italian Navy, Filomena Prima has approached the RIB and our rescue boat, together with 2 helicopter of the Italian Navy, have rescued around 98 migrants and taken them onboard the vessel. “We are not heroes, we have just done what we had to”.

It’s time of Geoday: Flying dinosaurs, scavenger hunts, open lessons, laboratory experiments and many games, both for children and adults…a great week end dedicated to Geology!

For the first time our Company supported the Geoday, the two-day long event organized by the Department of Geological Sciences of the University of Bologna to celebrate the four centuries of the Faculty in our city. Open museums and open lessons; stands where it will be possible discover something more about vulcanology, speleology and petrografy; tours around the medieval centre of Bologna with guides that will show you something you never noticed before…A great event that last year registered thousands of participants.

The participation at the Geoday has been really positive for our Company, the event presented interesting opportunities to meet students and teachers, to talk about Geology with visitors, academics, researchers… and to spread the knowledge of our reality.

For the first time, GAS participated at the Caspian Oil & Gas Exhibition, the leading and largest event in the Caspian regionâ€s oil and gas industry.
This year the event at the Baku Expo Centre attracted more than 402 companies from 29 countries.

The exhibition was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijani, His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, and as a tradition he congratulated the participants, visitors and organizers of the event. In his speech, the president stressed on the importance of the role of the Oil and Gas industry in his country which has propelled the rapid development of Azerbaijanâ€s economy, and gave an assessment of the relevance and of the oil and gas exhibition, which has, for more than twenty years, been the flagship industry event.

This year is very significant in the history of Azerbaijan oil and gas industry as the country celebrates the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Contract of the Century. The first Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference opened in September 1994 on the eve of the signing of the Contract of the Century, which marked the beginning of a new period of development in the oil industry as well as the growth of the economy of Azerbaijan. At that time the initiative of holding the first specialized exhibition in the oil and gas industry in Azerbaijan was vigorously supported by the founder of the nation, his Excellency the late Heydar Aliyev, father of the current president His Excellency IIham Aliyev . Since then, Caspian Oil and Gas exhibition has become a meeting place for leading professionals in the fields of oil and gas, where agreements and contracts on future cooperation are signed. In the lounge of Baku Expo Centre the organizers of the event had set up a special display dedicated to the anniversary of the signing of the Contract of the Century, its history and achievements.

The impact of the COG 2014 on GAS has been positive, the event presented a greater opportunity to strengthen existing relationships and meet new opportunities of business, especially considering the great growth of our branch in Baku, that in less than two years has been able to solidify its position in the region, being involved in major oil and gas projects of the Caspian region.

GAS has opened a new branch office in Baku, Azerbaijan, in a strict connection with Azeri people and their business activities.
The Azerbaijani market is an interesting reality with a wide margin of growth.
A lot of foreign Companies are aware of the Azeri potential and they are trying to set up their business here, not only in the offshore industry, but in many other fields.

Azerbaijan sounds really attractive for different reasons, not only for its Oil & Gas field, but also for its strong will to be international, modern and competitive: Baku is a cosmopolitan and attractive centre, the most important of the whole Caucasian area.
In spite of this, we are not afraid of competition, because we strongly believe in our expertise and proficiency. We have built our company around the concept of reliability and deep knowledge, we follow our customers in every phase of the project and we are sure to give our best every time.

We are also aware of the strong bilateral relationship existing between Azerbaijan and Italy, characterized by a long tradition of business and cooperation, which we are interested in keeping strong and substantial.
