Early in October 2018, in a joint venture with the local partner RECON Engineering LLP, LIGHTHOUSE has successfully completed the Geophysical and Geotechnical Survey inside the Pearls Project, in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea.

Lead by CMOC – Caspi Meruerty Operating Company – the Consortium between Shell EP Offshore Ventures Limited (55%), KazMunayTeniz OOC JSC (25%) and Oman Pearls Company Limited (20%), the Pearls Project envisages the development of the Khazar and Auezov fields discovered in the north Caspian Sea (also called “the Pearls block”).

The current development plan for the Khazar field foresees a co-development with the adjacent Kalamkas field (operated by NCOC), in order to maximise synergies and contribute to the economic viability of both the Kalamkas and Khazar fields.

THE SURVEY

The geophysical survey consisted of the acquisition of approximately 100 linear kilometres of 2DHR Seismic Data and more than 900 linear kilometres of analogue data (MBES, SSS and SBP).
The geotechnical survey, using CPT and Vibrocorer, involved the collection of samples in 22 locations along the pipeline route, at 5-10 m of depth. Offshore activities have been completed smoothly, within the budget and without any Lost Time Injury (LTI).

The strategic partnership with RECON Engineering LLP has consolidated our role in the area as a leading survey provider in Kazakhstan.
Since 2004, LIGHTHOUSE (formerly G.A.S. Geological Assistance and Services) has established a strong presence in the whole Caspian Area, and has been involved in the most important offshore projects both in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
LIGHTHOUSE have created hubs to provide survey and positioning services for Oil&GAS companies across the Caspian Region: it has an operative office in Atyrau (Kazakhstan) and Baku (Azerbaijan), a fully-equipped warehouse in Aktau and a support base in Bautino for vessel mobilisation.

In early April, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) – Institute of Geography hosted a three-day seminary concerning the paleo-geographic conditions of the Miocene period. LIGHTHOUSE Azerbaijan Branch was pleased to be involved in the project, supporting the presence of the Austrian professor Andre Baldermann of Graz Technical University at the initiative.

Baldermann’s lessons concerned different topics of the paleo-geographic conditions of the Miocene period: clay minerals application in civil engineering and geology, the role of authigenic clay minerals in the biogeochemical cycle of iron and Paleo-climate evolution of Miocene sediments from the Valley of Lakes (Mongolia) revealed by multi-proxy approach.

Academician Ramiz Mammadov, which introduced the three-day meeting, welcomed the participants underlining the importance of the seminary, which aimed at promoting the development of scientific and practical cooperation between ANAS and the universities involved.

During the last day, it was held a workshop on “Geology of the Miocene Eastern Paratethys” which involved the director and scientists of ANAS institute, researchers of Institute of Geology and Geophysics, geologists of SOCAR and BP as well as professors and PhD, master and bachelor students participated in the workshop. Dr Yelena Tagiyeva from the Institute of Geography, Dr Shafag Bayramova from Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Prof Dr Sachsenhofer from Montana University, Nazim Abdullayev from BP gave a talk and discussed the geology of Miocene the Eastern Paratethys.

LIGHTHOUSE strongly believes in the importance of the mutualistic relationship between companies and universities and proudly chooses to actively support this kind of initiatives, both in Italy and in the countries where, as in Azerbaijan, has developed a strong presence.

In October 2015, GAS Azerbaijani branch was awarded to provide ROV visual inspection of the existing TOTALâ€s well head in the Absheron field.
TOTAL is the operator of the Absheron offshore condensate gas field, and the development plan is currently being defined. The Absheron offshore field, discovered in 2011, is located in the southern Caspian Sea and as a water depth of 500 m. GAS carried out this ROV visual inspection using the ROV Perseo GTV built by Ageotec. The ROV visual inspection has been successfully completed early in November with exceptional productivity thanks to the robustness and power of the vehicle, to the high definition cameras –streamed via fiber optic links to the surface in real time- and to the video processor which grants exceptional images even in poor visibility conditions. Ageotec is a leading company in production of best in class ROV systems and, as well as GAS, member of the Lighthouse Group.
Operation success confirms once again the strong role of GAS as one of the main survey contractor in the Caspian Sea area. In fact since 2013, GAS provided several surveys for TOTAL during the Absheron project development such as the Offshore Geophysical surveys which included a complex AUV survey.

The impact of the COG 2015 on GAS has been positive, the event presented a greater opportunity to strengthen existing relationships and meet new opportunities of business, especially considering the great growth of our branch in Baku, that in less than three years has been able to solidify its position in the region, being involved in major oil and gas projects of the Caspian region.
